The birth of Estonian Functionalism (modernism) is dated to the completion of architect Herbert Johanson’s villa at 6 Toompuiestee, Tallinn in 1929. The appearance of this house was such a surprise that even daily newspaper Päevaleht had a headline “With or without the roof?“.
